Title: Star quilt
Object Type: Quilt

Physical Description: Red, blue, orange, green, pink, and yellow diamond-shaped pieces of cotton were pieced together to form the large star that is the dominant design of this quilt. The diamonds in the very center are pink. Small orange and blue stars are in two of the corners. Small red and blue stars are in the other two corners. The background is a cream-colored cotton. The backing fabric was brought to the front to around the edges.
Description: The Rev. Dr. R. Hunter Keen and Mrs. Keen (Barbara Keen) received this star quilt from Harry and Lillian Spider Dumarce in 1958, shortly after Rev. Keen began serving as a Presbyterian pastor on the Sisseton-Wahpeton Reservation (formerly the Lake Traverse Reservation). Mrs. Keen was very busy caring for their four young children, and it was difficult for her to get out and meet people. So, she was very touched by the many Christmas gifts, including this star quilt, that they received for their first Christmas there. Mrs. Dumarce, a Dakota, was originally from the Crow Creek Reservation. It is not known whether she made this quilt by herself or with the help of other Dakota women. Rev. Keen also served Presbyterian churches on the Nez Perce and Ft. Peck Reservations.
