Physical Description: | Stained glass window of Miss Spokane as an Indian maiden; in her left hand she is holding a jug from which water is flowing and from her right hand she is sowing seeds. |
Description: | Jones & Dillingham designed this window for the Spokane Chamber of Commerce in 1912. Regional promoters created "Miss Spokane" to symbolize a bountiful Spokane as hub of the Inland Northwest. This early 20th century stereotype, influenced by literature and film, featured the Indian woman as princess. Several "Miss Spokanes" were adopted into local tribes and received authentic ceremonial gowns before the tradition ended in 1977. |
