Physical Description: | Navy blue, white, and gold wool "Spokane" flag; two parallel navy blue bars at top and bottom on a white field, the white widening diagonally to full width one-third or the length of the flag from staff end. Emblazoned in the white field near the staff end is a yellow sunburst surrounding a navy blue "S". The staff end has a grommet at both top and bottom corners. |
Description: | A 1912 contest held by the Ad Club prompted design of this Spokane municipal flag, the city's symbol until a new design in 1976. As Spokane entered the twentieth century, promoters acclaimed the burgeoning city as hub of the "Inland Empire" through publicity campaigns and symbols like this flag and the newly-created official hostess, "Miss Spokane," dressed in Native American attire to reflect regional history and culture. |
