Description: Chief Spokane Garry's long life spanned this region's era of white settlement. In 1824 his father, a Spokane chief, sent Garry to the Red River Settlement's missionary school in Canada. Garry returned after five years and became a steadfast peace advocate and influential leader. Yet he was unable to protect his peoples' rights to native lands along the Spokane River, and a homesteader eventually stole his farm. Garry lived out his life in poverty, camping in Indian Canyon, where he died in 1892. Today his name graces a Spokane city park where a 2011 monument honors both this historic figure and today's Spokane Tribe. Chief Garry's great-great-granddaughter preserved this Bible, which her family donated to the Museum in her memory. It is inscribed, "Presented to Geary, the Chief of the Spokan Tribe. From his Friend Mrs. Lucy Stuart, Portland, Oregon, August 29, 1874."
