Soundings - Painting
Accession #: 4087.1
Title: Soundings
Object Type: Painting
Participants:
Physical Description: Interior scene painted on Baltic birch; hundreds of small, cut out shapes of paper are pinned to the surface, hovering over a lattice pattern in green a small distance from the surface of the painting.
Description: Michelle Forsyth's painting "Soundings" is from a series of "disaster paintings" that utilized online images of accidents and death. Forsyth chose not to focus on voyeurism or sensationalism, rather her paintings rescue horrific images from their de-personalized context and surround them with beauty. In "Soundings" small colorful scraps of paper hover over the image, covering the disturbing reality of a body, and restoring dignity to the dead.
