Title: | Silk Log Cabin Quilt |
Object Type: | Quilt |
Participants: | |
Physical Description: | This quilt is made of eighty blocks, each consisting of rectangles arranged around a black center. Half of each block is black, and the other half is made of brightly colored fabrics. All four edges are black. The resulting effect suggests twenty brightly colored plus signs (+) surrounded by black. Most of the fabrics appear to be silk. |
Description: | Brightly colored fabrics of this Log Cabin quilt contrast with the black fabrics for dramatic effect in the setting known as "Light and Dark." The use of silk fabrics in Log Cabin quilts was very fashionable during the last quarter of the nineteenth century, and this piece was probably meant for decorative use only. |
