Description: | It's impossible to imagine spring in Spokane without Bloomsday. Olympic marathoner Don Kardong initiated Spokane's first Lilac Bloomsday Run with this poster on May 1, 1977, coinciding with a national running boom. More than 1,000 people ran in this inaugural race; Olympic gold and silver medalist Frank Shorter crossed the line first, followed by Herm Atkins of Seattle and Bloomsday founder Don Kardong. Today, this timed 12-kilometer race draws more than 50,000 participants annually, many of whom eagerly anticipate their first view of the finishers T-shirt. Thousands of volunteers fix bottlenecks and ensure that every runner receives their race time. And 6,000 elementary students start training early to get "Fit For Bloomsday." |
