Physical Description: | A dark blue wool aviator's cap, visored in the style of a baseball cap, size 6 ¾; the cap is embellished with embroidered yellow patches: 2 oak leaf clusters; 1 pair of wings with metal "S." |
Description: | Spokane aviator Roy Shreck was wearing this dark blue wool cap when he died in a 1976 airplane crash. He had learned to fly from aviation pioneer Nick Mamer, who made the first non-stop, transcontinental round-trip flight in the Spokane Sun-God in 1929. After Mamer's 1938 death in a Montana crash, Shreck continued to operate their Mamer-Shreck Air Transport Company and flying school. Aviation has been a major occupation in this region, from early shows at Felts Field, to World War II training and repairs at Geiger Field, to today's Fairchild Air Force Base operations. |
