Title: Rail Fence Quilt
Object Type: Quilt

Physical Description: This quilt is made up of two hundred eighty 2 1/2" squares, each composed of 6 variously colored strips or ribbons, arranged in a 14 x 20 grid. The fabrics include ties, ribbon pieces, and dress goods. There is a 7" brown velveteen border with mitered corners. The back is a dark rust wool gabardine with six-pointed thread stars.
Description: A shiny array of fabrics makes this quilt sparkle. The unknown maker may have used dressmaking remnants, or necktie scraps, but during the late nineteenth century, small fabric pieces like these were also widely available through mail order. This quilt, probably meant for display rather than warmth, was collected in Spangle, Washington.
