Accession #: 2208.1
Title: Quilt Top, Hexagonal Mosaic
Object Type: Quilt
Participants:
Eusden, Susan (creator)
Physical Description: This quilt top is made of hexagon-shaped pieces of fabric that were hand sewn together using a whipstitch. A large variety of fabrics were used. The hexagons were arranged so that a red "flower" appear in the center. This is surrounded by four pink "flowers" and an inner border of blue hexagons. Some of the paper templates used to form the hexagons remain attached by basting threads and are visible from the back.
Description: During the early eighteenth century, mosaic patchwork (also known as "English paper piecing") was fashionable in Great Britain. The technique spread to the American colonies and continues in popularity today. A wide variety of fabrics (some possibly from the early 1800s) appear in this unfinished quilt top, made by wrapping and basting fabrics around individual paper templates, then whip stitching the many pieces together into a quilt top. Family history states that Susan Eusden of Norfolk, England, brought this quilt top with her in 1869 to a homestead near Platte Center, Nebraska. Some remaining paper templates contain British spelling and references to early British monetary units, giving support to the family story.
