Physical Description: Blocks in this quilt contain large right triangles made up of 90 tiny triangles: 45 are navy indigo prints and 45 are white. The pieced triangles combine with large right triangles made of white fabric to form square blocks. These square blocks alternate with squares made of a white fabric with small tan circles. The white/tan fabric is deteriorating. The 3" pieced borders are made of indigo and white fabric. The piece is densely quilted in both cross hatch and scalloped patterns. It is bound with an indigo straight grain print. The quilt is inscribed on the back in brown ink: Sara L. Glover, 5th November 1846.
Description: In 1849, Sarah Koontz Glover, her husband, and eight of their children left Missouri to travel the Oregon Trail westward. She must have packed this quilt, inscribed with the date Nov.6, 1846; it eventually migrated from the family's new home in Salem, Oregon to Spokane, Washington, probably with her son Samuel or her son James Nettle Glover, one of the founders of Spokane.
