| Physical Description: | This quilt has 24 six-inch blocks which are appliqued and embroidered to illustrate letters of the alphabet. Twenty-two of the blocks represent one letter each. The letters T and U are illustrated on one block by a tiger and "Little Black Sambo" (from the story popular in the late 19th and first half of the 20th centuries). One block contains the letters X, Y, and Z on separate balloons held by a clown. The box on the lower bottom right of the quilt reads "Wallace Bartoo December 1930 Spokane". There is blue sashing between the blocks with orange squares where four blocks meet. There is an orange inner border and a blue outer border. The backing is orange with a blue border. The quilt is all hand stitched. |
| Description: | Frankie Bartoo (1902-2007) was born in Harrington, Washington and lived in Spokane for most of her life. She made this quilt for her son, Wallace, in 1930 when he was four years old. At least some of the designs came from commercially available patterns. At the age of 104, Mrs. Bartoo spoke of Wallace as a most memorable figure in her life. |
