Physical Description: Late 19th century Persian tribal (Quashai) saddlebag, with knotted face and smoothly woven back. The knotted face has 6 central squares with the same geometric pattern depicted in varying colors; the border is floral with geometric separators. Predominant colors are red, blue, tan, and cream. Along one edge above the fringe is a brown and white striped wool loop system The back of the pillow is woven, in a faded red color.
Description: Late 19th century interiors grew increasingly cosmopolitan, often combining both domestic and foreign objects, such as arts and crafts from un-industrialized countries. Oriental rugs became extremely popular, and small versions like saddlebags were re-configured into decorative pillows. The Campbell family may have brought this 19th century bag home from their 1904 trip to Egypt, then fashioned it into a decorative pillow.
