Description: | In 1853 American artist John Mix Stanley (1814-1872) joined the Isaac I. Stevens expedition, one of four government surveys commissioned to determine the best transcontinental railroad route to the Pacific Ocean. The Stevens expedition documented a northern route from St. Paul, Minnesota to the Puget Sound, recording flora, fauna, and Native American tribes along the way. Their extensive report included work by survey artists Stanley and Gustavus Sohon, some of the first views of this region. |
