Physical Description: Centerpieces or tazzas, pair, tiered stands in "Blue Onion" pattern by Meissen with pierced rims, topped by a figure of a romantically garbed boy and girl, on a round foot. Hand painted porcelain with fine detail on figures. Seated girl (A); Standing Boy (B)
Description: From the 1890s until 1920, dining table centerpieces were very popular; these included epergnes, pedestaled fruit/berry stands, berry bowls, and fruit baskets with handles and often fluted glass inserts. Grace Campbell's table or sideboard likely featured this pair of hand-painted porcelain tazzas in the "Blue Onion" pattern by Meissen of Germany. Very little is known of her choice of china for each place setting, although French influence brought coordinated tableware to America, and Haviland china was by far the most desirable tabletop symbol of success between 1870 and 1900.
