Description: | In the 1880s Ybor City (Tampa), Florida, was producing hundreds of millions of cigars annually. By 1906, 18 cigar factories operated in Spokane, among 80,000 nationwide. Most were small, family-operated shops that rolled cigars for immediate sale to local saloons and cigar shops. Charles Barth, who operated one of Spokane's largest factories, employed up to 21 workers who used tobacco filler from Ohio, binders from Massachusetts or Connecticut, and wrappers from Sumatra. Amasa Campbell's accounts show frequent cigar purchases, either local or imported; oral histories note that cigar smoke filled his Den game room. Campbell died from throat cancer in 1912. |
