Physical Description: | This navy blue and white overshot coverlet consists of 2 panels seamed at the center. It has a continuous overall pattern with borders on three sides. Its side borders are 3 inches wide, and the end border is 5 inches wide with a small fringe at this edge. |
Description: | This coverlet is associated with Catherine Bush Gwin (1833-1914). Catherine was born in Ohio, but moved to Iowa in 1846, where she spent the rest of her life. Overshot coverlets like this one were woven by both professionals and home weavers. Perhaps this piece was made by Catherine, or a family member. Catherine's daughter, Lillie Belle Gwin Wright (1870-1944) brought the coverlet with her when she moved West. |
