Nymphs and Satyr

Nymphs and Satyr - Painting
Accession #: 1588.2
Title: Nymphs and Satyr
Object Type: Painting
Participants:
Physical Description: Unframed oil painting of two nymphs in background looking on four nymphs playfully pulling a satyr toward water. It is an outdoors scene with lots of trees.
Description: Around 1890 Swedish artist Olaf Grafstrom lived briefly in Spokane. Legend has it that he painted Nymphs and Satyr in the bar of the Coeur d'Alene Hotel; the painting decorated the lobby until 1956. His painting is a copy of one by French artist William Adolphe Bougereau. The building still stands at the southeast corner of Howard and Spokane Falls Boulevard. Spokane played host to miners, railroad workers, timber workers, and other men who came into town with money in their pockets and a desire to spend it. Preferred pursuits - gambling, drinking, and prostitution - meant business, and city officials either looked the other way or sanctioned specific businesses to kept customers happy.
