Physical Description: Military cap of thick, tightly woven white canvas or cotton fabric. Headband is of wide black woven tape or band. At front, center of head band is an embroidered Naval insignia, an anchor with fabric backing. Bill of cap is shiny black leather. Brass buttons at each side of cap holds thin chin straps onto cap; straps hang loosely.
Description: Norman Erickson entered the North Dakota National Guard in 1935 and completed naval training in 1937. By 1940, he worked for Vultee Aircraft Company in Long Beach, California. Norman learned to fly and in 1942 was certified as an aviator with the United States Navy. In 1943, he crashed in the Aleutian Islands and was missing for a harrowing 12 days. He suffered severe frost bite to his feet, resulting in the amputation of the toes on both feet.
