Physical Description: Brown leather aviator's helmet has chin strap that buckles onto helmet at each side of helmet. Helmet has pockets with snaps at each side as well. Helmet is fleece lined and has 3 straps on back. There is a label sewn into the fleece in the interior of the helmet. Helmet has a spare chin strap.
Description: Norman Erickson entered the North Dakota National Guard in 1935 and completed naval training in 1937. By 1940, he worked for Vultee Aircraft Company in Long Beach, California. Norman learned to fly and in 1942 was certified as an aviator with the United States Navy. In 1943, he crashed in the Aleutian Islands and was missing for a harrowing 12 days. He suffered severe frost bite to his feet, resulting in the amputation of the toes on both feet.
