Title: | Nine Patch Quilt Top |
Object Type: | Quilt |
Participants: | |
Physical Description: | This unfinished quilt top is constructed of eighty blocks. Forty blocks pieced in a "Nine Patch" design alternate with forty plain blocks that are all made of the same light print fabric. Two sides have borders made of the same light print fabric. Some of the fabrics are torn or deteriorated. Hand piecing is clearly seen from the back. |
Description: | The varied fabrics used in this hand-pieced quilt top stand out due to the simplicity of its "Nine Patch" design. The fabrics are typical of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The maker is unknown, but blocks like these were commonly pieced by young girls during the nineteenth century as a way to develop basic sewing skills. |
