Object Type: Stoner, Cherry

Physical Description: Galvanized metal cherry stoner with an oval plate, four pronged pit remover, cranking mechanism and frame that includes a small slide for the cherry pits and a piece that secures stoner to prepping surface. The bottom of the frame has an L-shaped design with fits around the edge of a prepping surface and mounts with a screw. This screw is missing. The remainder of the frame consists of a rear vertical piece that holds one end of the pit remover, a curved piece that secures the crank mechanism from the bottom-front, two angled pieces that support the pronged end of the cherry pitter and a small shelf that includes the slide for the cherry pits. The oval plate designed to catch the pitted cherries connects to this shelf between the small slide and the pit remover via a small screw with a tab handle on the bottom. There is a pit sized hole between the slide and the oval plate. The crank mechanism includes an L-shaped handle, connecting to the frame from the back, that threads through a flat, slanted oval piece with cut outs. When the handle is cranked this oval piece turns and causes the pit remover to slide back and forth.
Description: The Mount Joy, Pennsylvania area hosted numerous companies, including the M.A. Rollman and New Standard Hardware companies that produced and sold mechanical kitchen equipment such as this cherry stoner around 1900. This piece came to the museum through the Campbell and Powell Families.
