Physical Description: This woven coverlet has a cream-colored cotton warp and a weft of madder red and indigo blue wool. Its design motifs include: compass, grape leaves with diamond pattern at border above fringed edges. The edge is fringed on three sides. It is hemmed on the top edge (hem stitch is loose). The following inscription is woven into two corners: MADE BY D.L. MYERS BETHEL TOWNSHIP FOR CATHARIN BAKER 1853
Description: This "figured and fancy" woven coverlet was likely commissioned as gift for Catharin Baker. Catharin was born in 1833 in Pennsylvania, but moved with her parents and siblings to Bethel Township, Clark County, Ohio. The weaver, Daniel L. Myers, was also born in Pennsylvania (1801), and moved to Bethel Township, Cark County, Ohio, by 1840. He was an professional weaver for at least twenty years, but, as the market for handwoven coverlets declined, he turned to farming to make a living.
