Description: Diphtheria claimed victims with high fever and suffocation when swollen membranes closed the throat. Spokane's Dr. Wilson Lockhart produced an antitoxin serum that helped patients endure the illness. Grace Day vividly remembered using the serum when she had diphtheria as a child. Her note, found in the medicine box when donated, states "this bottle the doctor gave me when I had diphtheria when about 10 years old. Many children died then. The doctor stayed with me all night peeling from my throat black pieces that formed there." She saved the bottle as a reminder. In 1923 a vaccine ended the deadly claim of the disease.
