Title: | Morey Overshot Coverlet |
Object Type: | Coverlet |
Participants: | |
Physical Description: | This overshot coverlet is made of blue wool and white linen or cotton, woven into a variation of a Sunrise pattern. Two 36 inch panels are sewn together with a casual regard for pattern matching. It has selvage edges and a hemmed top and bottom. |
Description: | The intriguing design of this overshot coverlet is due to the supplementary blue wool that "overshoots" the plain weave foundation. During the early 19th century, this technique was sometimes called "Floating Work." This coverlet was possibly hand woven by Lydia Smith Morey (1822-1893) or her mother, Jane McCord Smith (1792-1870). It was brought to Spokane by descendants. |
