Physical Description: | This quilt is made of many six-sided elongated patches, which are embroidered in a variety of motifs. Inscriptions include: "ANACONDA April 9, 1891" and "GAR" and "Men of Butte Honored". The scalloped border alternates patches of velvet and a satin-type fabric. |
Description: | Embroidered inscriptions on this quilt suggest that it was made in 1891 to honor Montana Civil War veterans. "GAR" stands for "Grand Army of the Republic," founded in 1866, with membership limited to veterans of the Union Army. Both Butte and Anaconda are inscribed on this quilt, and both had GAR posts. |
