Object Type: Pasteurizer, Milk
Participants:
Physical Description: Pasteurizer consists of a pot with heating element in bottom; there is a separate bucket with a handle which fits inside, resting on the heating element; a large, heavy dome-shaped lid fits over top of the pot/bucket, which has its own electrical cord. There is an on/off dial on the control panel on the front of the pot.
Description: William and Catherine Meyer used this electric pasteurizer at their award-winning Deep Creek dairy farm from 1929 to 1998. They drove cans of milk to Spokane via horse and wagon until a Darigold Co-op truck began daily pickup. When milk production exceeded local consumption, Washington dairy farmers founded the Darigold Co-op to market their products outside the region; William Meyer served as Darigold president for 16 years.
