Physical Description: | This quilt is made of twenty blocks, made from a variety of fabrics, arranged in a 4 x 5 grid. The blocks are predominantly red, pink, and gray, but one block has two yellow corners. The blocks are separated by green and brown striped sashing. The same striped fabric makes up the border. |
Description: | It is possible that it took nearly a century to complete this quilt. The individual blocks were likely pieced between 1880-1910, with the sashing and border added at a later date. The unfinished top was purchased around 1980 from the estate of Maude McLain, the first woman commercial pilot in Washington state. It was quilted in Spokane in 1982 by Mallythong Thongdammany, a refugee from Laos. The bright colors of the back are reminiscent of Laotian textiles. |
