Description: | As early as 1883, the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) formed an East Washington Union in Cheney. This 1912 banner represents another regional chapter, the Margaret B. Platt Union. During this time, many women gained important public and civic leadership experience by organizing, speaking and lobbying for social reforms. Among such efforts, the Woman's Christian Temperance Union countered prostitution, disorderly behavior, and drunkenness. |
