Physical Description: Victorian Rococo style desk with small pigeon holes with scalloped edges set at back of top against a solid arched backsplash. A pair of two small drawers flank a central apron drawer with carved corner brackets at knee hole opening. The desk is supported by deeply curved, carved cabriole legs with carved paw feet. Finish is mahogany with burl graining. Drawers have oval ribbed brass pulls.
Description: Typical of many well-to-do families that chose to build, decorate, and furnish new homes around the turn of the 20th century, in 1897-98 Amasa and Grace Campbell enlisted the expertise of both an architect and a decorator, choosing the prominent Spokane architectural firm of Kirtland Cutter & Karl Malmgren, and the Cleveland, Ohio interior decorator, William Otis. The Otis plan specified numerous pieces of mahogany furniture, mostly new construction in revival styles, including this rococo carved and veneered desk in the Library.
