Physical Description: | 18-piece sterling silver dinner knife set in Whiting Manufacturing Co's Louis XV pattern with Sheffield stainless blades made in England. The set includes some knives with Grace Campbell's monogram, "GFC", and some with a monogram "C". Both of these are near the middle of each handle. |
Description: | The 1859 Comstock Lode discovery provided a large silver supply, and silver flatware became a dining essential. New serving pieces were introduced during the 1880s and 1890s, before the number of pieces in any one pattern began to decline. Grace Campbell owned an assortment of flatware in the Whiting Company's 1891 "Louis XV" pattern, including a set of knives. Although their handles date to the 1890s, the original blades were replaced with English "Stainless Steel", a material discovered in 1913 but not widely available until after World War I. |
