Physical Description: Black and white photographic image of a young Hutterite girl (Linda Gross) sitting at a desk reading a schoolbook. There is a young boy sitting behind her, writing.
Description: In 1994, photographer Kristin Capp moved to Soap Lake, Washington, and gained the trust of a community of Hutterites, a communal group of Anabaptists who live close to the earth in rural colonies. Her black-and-white photographs depict their simple life. "I observed their ability to strike a peaceful and productive balance between religious faith, commitment to community, and the act of working the land," she explained. "I aim to convey the gesturing and movement of a people who strike me as elegant in their connectedness to the earth, but who regard their worldly life as a transition and preparation for the next."
