| Description: | Louis and Verus Davenport and their son Lewis all had an eye for acquiring beautiful decorative arts. In 1987 Lewis bequeathed over 125 family pieces to this museum, along with funds to preserve them and to create expanded museum galleries. Within this Davenport decorative arts collection are 14 silver items from the Kalo Studio, formed in 1900 by six young women graduates of the Chicago Art Institute. The shop operated until 1970, producing hand-wrought flatware, hollow ware and jewelry. During a time when many businesses shunned women designers and immigrant craftsmen, this shop employed both. |
