Kaiser Aluminum Work Boots - Boot
Accession #: 4244.1
Title: Kaiser Aluminum Work Boots
Object Type: Boot
Participants:
Cain, Michael (user)
Physical Description: Pair of well-worn men's ankle high work boots; fabricated from both brown and black leathers with reinforced toe, different types of nails and staples hold boots together, large flap covers top of foot over laces, however there are no laces in the boots.
Description: To fund his Gonzaga University tuition, Michael Cain worked the summer of 1980 at Kaiser's Mead aluminum reduction mill. As a carbon setter on the pot lines, he would experience intense heat. New employees took their boots to retired pot men to add layers of old tire treads to the soles, but after every shift his boots were completely soaked in sweat. Aluminum grew into a major regional economy during World War II, and thousands worked jobs like this at reduction and rolling facilities owned by Henry Kaiser after 1946.
