Physical Description: | Blue-grey felt man's hat ringed by a slightly darker wide ribbon. The hat came in a red cardboard hatbox with "Dobbs Fifth Avenue New York" in white around the rim of the lid. |
Description: | Owners John Kakakes and James Papantone operated John's Hat Shop in Spokane for 50 years. In the late 1950s, they sold this hat as a gift for Greek immigrant, William Cassis, who had arrived in this region in 1912 and Americanized his name from Vasilios Georgeos Kassios. William first owned a Spokane shoeshine parlor, and then a tavern and hotel. Greeks from far corners of this region first built a community hall on Washington Street, then in 1947-48 constructed the adjacent Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox church. |
