Physical Description: | Black stained wooden trunk with black metal bottom corners and three black metal straps; all metal is attached with square nails. The trunk has a key lock and the interior of the trunk is natural wood. |
Description: | Johann Schoenberger left Bavaria for America in 1871 with a thirst to "see what was over there." His belongings came in this trunk, crafted from the tree under which he sat when herding cattle. In the timber-rich Inland Northwest, his sawmills helped build Spokane. Rich soil, timber, and minerals lured settlement to this region, and both immigrant families and migrant laborers were integral to community development. |
