Description: Realizing the power the river would provide a town and speculating on the eventual path of the railroad, James Glover purchased land at Spokane Falls from homesteaders in 1871. He developed an existing sawmail, opened a store and encouraged Frederick Post to build a flour mill. By 1878, Glover formally filed a plat naming blocks and streets; he was instrumental in establishing Spokane Falls as the county seat. Glover's speculation made him very wealthy, however he lost much of his fortune in the 1893 worldwide financial panic. Glover is generally considered the primary founder of what would become the city of Spokane.
