Physical Description: Paper certificate with a raised red seal in the bottom left corner. Certificate number 556, it was signed on April 5th, 1878 by Rutherford B. Hayes, President, B.L. Lang, Secretary, and S.W. Leear, Recorder of the Land Office, and recorded, Vol. 1, Page 488.
Description: S.R. Scranton and J.J. Downing filed the first homestead claims at Spokane Falls in 1871 and, two years later, sold to James Glover from Oregon's Willamette Valley. Glover added a circular saw to the existing sawmill, opened a store, and enticed Frederick Post to build a flour mill. In 1878, he formally filed a plat naming blocks and streets including Front (now Spokane Falls Boulevard), Howard, Main, and Riverside.
