Description: | James Chase won this campaign and became Spokane's first African American mayor, serving from 1982 to 1985. Many African Americans were brought into Roslyn as coal mine strikebreakers in the 1880s, eventually migrating into more urban areas. In Spokane, they owned and operated businesses, established churches central to community life, became social and political leaders, and worked in a variety of occupations. |
