Description: This dental chair, patented 1905-1909, was used to care for children at The Hutton Settlement, a home for orphaned children established by Levi Hutton in 1919 in the Spokane Valley. After about 1850 dentistry emerged as a distinct medical profession, and slowly reached the Inland Northwest. By 1887 Spokane had five practicing dentists, with more scattered throughout the region. Dental innovations, equipment and techniques improved through both world wars. After 1950 sterile disposable equipment became the norm, along with the new "Sit-down, Four-Handed Dentistry" method which offered more physical comfort for the dentist and an assistant.
