Title: | Howard Overshot Coverlet |
Object Type: | Coverlet |
Participants: | |
Physical Description: | This overshot coverlet has a white, apparently cotton warp. The weft is apparently made of wool, in two different shades of indigo. Two panels are pieced together at the center seam. The piece shows wear from use overall. N. F. Howard is handwritten on a label and sewn into a corner. It is narrowly hemmed at top and bottom with selvage edges at sides. |
Description: | "Double Bow-Knot" is a common name for the design of this overshot coverlet. It is attributed to Mary Lucinda Wyckle Howard (1825-1904), who apparently lived her whole life near the community of Otto in Macon County, North Carolina. Family history states that the wool used in the coverlet came from sheep that Mary Lucinda and her husband, Col. D. LaFayette Howard, raised on their farm. There is a long tradition of weaving coverlets like this in the region. |
