Physical Description: | This object is a quilted and embroidered narrative using bright thread colors on a blue gray cotton background. There is an inner border of brown triangles on all four sides. The narrative depicts figures who are fleeing soldiers' aircraft on foot and by boat. |
Description: | By creating story pictures, Hmong needlewomen not only manifest their exquisite skills, but also narrate their difficult and dramatic escape from Laos. Hmong guerillas aided the American forces during the Vietnam conflict. In 1976 many fled their homeland to resettle in Minnesota and California. A smaller group made Spokane their home, facing the challenge to maintain language and traditions while adapting to Western culture. An unnamed Hmong woman made this needlework around 1989. It is the story of the Vietnam conflict from her perspective. |
