Physical Description: The warp of this woven coverlet is made of a cream colored (possibly) cotton yarn and a light blue (possibly) cotton yarn. The weft is of madder red and indigo blue wool. Its motifs include: eight-pointed stars, roses, a five petal flower and birds. Three sides are fringed, one edge is hemmed. Woven into the corner of the coverlet is: LEVI ANDERSON FANCY COVERLET WOVE BY J. J. HEILBRONN BASIL OHIO 1841
Description: John Jacob Heilbronn included birds, stars, flowers, and baskets when he wove this coverlet for his customer, Levi Anderson, in 1841. Heilbronn was born in 1809 in Alsace, France. After immigrating to the United States, he worked as a professional weaver in Ohio. Heilbronn died in 1842, the year after he wove this coverlet.
