Description: Everything changed in the rural agricultural towns of Hanford and White Bluffs when the U.S. government chose the site for its secret wartime Manhattan Project in 1942. Its plant, the Hanford Atomic Works, developed plutonium for atomic bombs dropped on Nagasaki, Japan in 1945. Since the war, nuclear power projects and waste cleanup on the 600-square-mile Hanford Atomic Reservation have impacted the economies of nearby Richland and Kennewick.
