Physical Description: Handmade violin, wooden with black tuning pegs. The fingerboard and scroll appear to be hand carved. There is no chin rest; finish is darkly stained in this area of the body of the instrument. Strings are loose.
Description: Born in Kentucky in 1845, John Jefferson Keyser enlisted in the US Army in 1863. As a private assigned to Kentucky's mounted infantry, he fought in the Civil War. He is noted as the last remaining Civil War veteran living in Spokane. This well worn violin was brought to the Eastern Washington State Historical Society, along with a medal commemorating the 75th Anniversary of Gettysburg, in 1946 after his death at 101 years of age.
