Great Pearl Oyster Shell

Great Pearl Oyster Shell - Material, Animal
Accession #: 4.1.3
Title: Great Pearl Oyster Shell
Object Type: Material, Animal
Participants:
Campbell, Amasa B. (collector)
Physical Description: A set of four great pearl oyster shells with smooth polished surface and a rounded shape that comes to a soft point on the bottom. The exteriors of the shells are purple-brown in color and fade into white closer to the soft point or flat edge. One shell in this set is completely white. There are naturally formed curved lines across the shell as well. The reverse side is grey-white in color with some brown along the edges. It has a rougher and less polished appearance. There is also a raised triangle shaped grove near the bottom where a bottom and top shell would have connected to each other.
Description: After Grace Campbell died in 1924 and her home became a museum, the family donated several small collections, probably amassed by Amasa B, Campbell (1845-1912). These ranged from souvenir paperweights and military ribbons, to a collection of seashells and mineral specimens gathered from regional mining sites.
