Physical Description: | Empire style mahogany game table has a rectangular fold-over top on four columnar legs with husk carving on lower section. Table has an incurvate plinth base supported by carved paw feet. |
Description: | Typical of many well-to-do families that chose to build, decorate, and furnish new homes around the turn of the 20th century, in 1897-98 Amasa and Grace Campbell enlisted the expertise of both an architect and a decorator, choosing the prominent Spokane architectural firm of Kirtland Cutter & Karl Malmgren, and the Cleveland, Ohio interior decorator, William Otis. The Otis plan specified numerous pieces of mahogany furniture, mostly new construction in revival styles. A photograph of the Campbell's Library appeared in the September 1908 issue of Western Architect magazine, showing this Empire-style table used as a side table, bearing an elegant banquet lamp. The table top swivels to reveal a storage space for games and cards, and also unfolds for use as a card or game table. |
