Title: | Flower Applique Quilt |
Object Type: | Quilt |
Participants: | |
Physical Description: | Four large floral motifs featuring red flowers and green leaves make up the central design of this quilt. The border is made up of the same flowers and leaves. Most of the red fabric has deteriorated. Some of the green fabric has deteriorated, also. All motifs are appliqued onto a cream-colored background. The quilting design echoes the motifs. The spaces between the motifs are quilted in the hanging diamonds pattern. |
Description: | When new, this quilt must have been stunning. The unknown maker skillfully appliqued curved flowers, vines, and leaves, which seem to flow across the cream-colored background. Unfortunately, much of the red and green fabric has deteriorated, leaving us to imagine how it once looked. Red and green applique quilts with floral motifs were especially popular during the mid-nineteenth century. |
