Physical Description: | This embroidered bedspread is composed of three panels. The fabric and embroidery thread are stained brown overall. The embroidered motifs match 1236.7a with birds, flowers tree and possibly a sun (circular) motifs. There is a central square filled with an embroidered checkerboard; stitches here are loose and some are broken. The edges are hemmed on two edges; the remaining two edges are selvedge edges. Unlike 1236.7a, the edges are not finished with fringe. There are rips and tears in several places along edges. |
Description: | Flowers and leaves stream out from a central checkerboard motif in this cheerful counterpane. The unknown maker also embroidered stylized birds and baskets. White textiles were highly fashionable in the United States from the late 1700s through the first half of the nineteenth century. |
