Physical Description: | The top of this embroidered bedspread is composed of three panels with widths of 16 ½", 33", and 33 ½" with a 2" fringe on all sides. The cream-colored fabric and embroidery thread appear to be cotton. The embroidered motifs include birds, baskets, flowers, stems, and leaves. Two of the borders have five motifs that appear to be sunflowers, and the other two borders have undulating vines. The embroidery stitches are primarily: stem stitch, satin stitch, lazy daisy stitch, and French knots. It has been mended in at least one place with darning stitch. |
Description: | The unknown maker of this counterpane included whimsical birds, flowering baskets, and cheerful sunflowers when she embroidered this piece. White textiles were highly fashionable in the United States from the late 1700s through the first half of the nineteenth century. |
